Trying to Keep Busy... (Mrs. Lovett)

The shop was empty. Or at least maybe it was. Tobias Ragg had to wonder where everyone was, especially since it was getting close to dinner hour. He had been out at the grocer's market, getting some more ingredient's for his caretaker. Mrs. Lovett was always a busy woman nowadays. She was lucky that he had come around and that his former master had left him behind for some strangely odd reason. In all honestly, Toby did believe that Pirelli had left his own servant boy at a pie maker's shop… no, there had to be some other reason.

But enough with idle thoughts. There was work to be done around this place and he needed to get it done swiftly and excellent before the rush started, or even before Mrs. Lovett came from where ever she was. Getting out his cleaning rag, he decided to start on the counters and tables inside first before he moved outside. The woman must've been upstairs visiting with the barber.

Toby glanced up quickly as he moved from table to table, hearing slight footsteps. He couldn't tell if they were Mr. Todd's or Mrs. Lovett's, or even both. With a shake of his head though, he brought himself out of it and back onto the task at hand.

Nellie sighed as she descended the stairs from Mr. Todd's shop, her thoughts still up there with him. He'd been getting better- sometimes having conversations with her that lasted more than a few seconds, but that afternoon he'd been rather quiet. Business had been slow- she didn't recall seeing even one body drop through the chute for the past couple of days, and why should one? It wasn't as if they needed the supplies, with so few people coming in, now.

She pushed open the door to her shop and was instantly greeted by the sight of her Toby cleaning up the counter and tables. She couldn't help but let a small smile tug at her lips. He was such a sweet boy- always doing what he was told and then some, and Nellie was grateful to have him as a hand around the shop.

"My, my... someone's been busy!" She walked over to him and ruffled his hair. "That's my boy." It was always nice to have her friendly little Toby to talk to, especially on days like that where she couldn't get more than a few words out of Mr. Todd.

"You won't need to clean the tables outside, love," she said. "I doubt we'll even fill it up in here." Nellie sighed, though she tried her absolute best to not let on that it bothered her how quickly business had gone down again. She made a mental note to go and see for herself just why so few people were coming in for pies. It had occurred to her on more than one occasion that perhaps dear Mr. Todd had killed a few too many people, but once she thought about it, it wasn't a very logical reason. Resigned, she sat at one of the tables and watched Toby- no matter how big her problem or worry, he always cheered her up.

Toby leaned over, grabbing more of the crumbs from the messier tables. Didn't people have manners nowadays? He wondered to himself quietly. Soon, it was clean and he moved onward. He didn't even noticed the movement outside from Mrs. Lovett coming down the stairs. When he heard the door open however, he looked up to find her walking in. He paused from his work slightly, giving a huge smile to her. She seemed exhausted, maybe even a bit saddened? Toby knew that people weren't coming in like before, but sooner or later, business had to pick up. He hated seeing his Mum like this.

When she ruffled his hair, he couldn't help but chuckle a bit. " 'Course Mum, can't 'ave this place lookin' like a mess… plus, that's wot I'm 'ere for…" he said. His cheeks turned bright red when she said 'her boy'. Hadn't had anyone call him that since he left his family. But they was all in the past now. Mrs. Lovett was his family.

She seemed bothered now, he noticed. "Right Mum…" he said, getting back to wiping the indoor tables. There were only a few left now, then he could get to sweeping. She sat down and Toby tried his absolute best to not stop and sit with her. He wanted to get the job done so that way he would have a little extra time with her before anyone came in.

As she sat and watched Toby cleaning, she realized the little good it was doing her to be just sitting there dwelling on recent events. With that in mind, she got up and started making another batch of dough for the pie crusts, and it wasn't until she was halfway through adding the ingredients to the large bowl that she stopped and it came to her that such a thing wasn't at all necessary. That dampened her spirits a little more, but out of habit, the ingredients just kept going in, and within a few minutes she had a lovely bowl of dough that wasn't going to be used.

"So Toby, love, what'd you do today?" she asked, more as a distraction for herself, though she really did care to know what he'd been up to.

Again she was automatically doing things- fashioning the dough into little bowls and placing them onto the nearest tray, filling them with meat and gravy, putting on the top... Nellie wanted to beat herself with her rolling pin, but that wasn't a usual routine for her and so it didn't happen. Once all the pies were on the tray, she gave them a long, hard look and set them behind her so they weren't in her range of sight.
